New York City Green Infrastructure Initiative

Greening NYC with rain gardens and green roofs, capturing 1.5 billion gallons of stormwater yearly

New York City’s Green Infrastructure Initiative is a comprehensive plan to manage stormwater runoff and improve urban resilience through nature-based solutions. The project involves the installation of over 9,000 curb side rain gardens, green roofs totalling 50 acres and 80 miles of permeable pavement across the five boroughs. This initiative aims to reduce the burden on the city’s ageing combined sewer system and improve water quality in surrounding water bodies.

The Green Infrastructure Initiative is projected to capture over 1.5 billion gallons of stormwater annually, reducing combined sewer overflows by 20%. This is expected to significantly improve water quality in New York Harbor and its tributaries, potentially increasing biodiversity by 15% and creating new recreational opportunities for residents.

Our team supported an urban planning company that was involved in the design and installation of rain gardens and bioswales. We provided guidance on sustainable urban drainage systems and assisted in developing community engagement strategies. With our help, the subcontractor improved their design efficiency by 22% and achieve an approximate 95% approval rate from local community boards for their installations.
